Real-time reflections
In the transition from winter to spring this year, I wrote on the idea of beginning again. That was primarily based in the natural and astrological seasons. Now, here’s a more Scripture based approach relevant to the Advent season and preparing our hearts for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. Short, sweet, and to the point.
In Luke 3:1-6, John tells us to begin again. He invites us to turn back to God. While he is in the desert, He has an encounter with God. When we encounter God and turn to Him, we are often turning our back on something else. What are you turning away from this month?
During Advent, God invites us to begin again, to set our sights on Him. As I set my sights on Him and spend more time with Him, what am I saying no to? What am I choosing not to do in order to make space for my relationship with God? For me, this looks like reading more Scripture, going to Mass, going to worship services, and spending time with loved ones.
As we approach Christmas and the official start of the winter season at the December Solstice on the 21st, the days are growing shorter. The world around us is getting darker. We are turning inwards. We are using our power and will to say no to the things that don’t need to get done right now and yes to the things that do.
Yes, the days are shorter and the darkness is longer. Yet, where do we see the light? Where can we find beauty in the darkness? Here in Colorado, we’ve had beautiful sunrises and sunsets recently which allows me to appreciate the light and colors that we do have when the sun is out. I am also very much noticing how the darkness affects me. I am sleeping more and slowing down (where I can, even amidst crazy schedules and travel). This slowness allows me to pause and take in more of my surroundings. On a slow walk around the neighborhood the other evening, I took in all the sights of my neighbor's Christmas lights and festive decorations and couldn’t help but smile. There is hope all around us! There is joy all around us! There is peace all around us!
Each day is a reminder of the day’s newness. We can always begin again. No matter what you are going through today: sadness, joy, emotional flooding, overwhelm, peace, growth, grief, hope, loss, etc.… God has got you and He has given you exactly what you can handle by leaning on Him. If it feels like too much, check that you’re not doing it alone. Ask for help. Ask for prayers. Surrender the final 1% to Him and He will take care of the rest.
I love you. God bless you this Advent and Christmas season and safe travels!
